HORSFIELD & HERMANN’S TORTOISES
Hermann's and Horsfield (also known as Russian) tortoises are popular pets due to their manageable size, easy care requirements, and gentle nature. Both species are small, typically reaching 6-10 inches in length, and typically live for over 50 years. They are known for their calm and friendly temperaments, which makes them enjoyable companions.
Hermann's and Horsfield tortoises are hardy and can adapt to a variety of environments, though they thrive best in setups that mimic their natural habitats. They require a simple diet primarily consisting of leafy greens, and their care routine is straightforward, making them ideal for both novice and experienced reptile keepers.

Tortoises need great ventilation to avoid developing respiratory infections, so we recommend housing your tortoise in an open-top table, rather than a vivarium.
If you have other animals in the home (or you just prefer the look of a vivarium), it is possible to opt for a wooden vivarium - so long as there is adequate ventilation.

Fish tanks - or any kind of glass enclosure - are unsuitable for tortoises.

The tortoise table is available to order in either oak or black, and is only available in one size.

The tortoise table will arrive flat-packed, but it's super-easy to assemble.

Keeping your tortoise outdoors is not recommended, because it's much more difficult to control the conditions they need to be happy and healthy (especially the temperature).

Your tortoise will need both heat and light in order for it to thrive.
Tortoises like the Horsfield and Hermanns are best kept with a temperature gradient that runs from around 30-32°C (86-89°F) in the basking spot to between 22-25°C (71-77°F) in the cooler end of the enclosure.
They also have medium-high UVB requirements, best suited to a UVI between 3-4 to ensure good bone and shell growth and avoid serious health issues such as metabolic bone disease.
To make things easier, our Tortoise Starter Kit comes with a light that combines both the heat and UVB requirements together (a mercury vapour basking lamp).

Tortoises like the Horsfield and Hermanns only need a humidity level of 40-50%, so the table in this Kit doesn't require anything else when it comes to humidity levels.

Horsfield and Hermanns tortoises are herbivorous, which means they need to eat leafy greens, garden weeds, fruit and vegetables.
All fresh food offered to your tortoise should be dusted with supplements according to a schedule to ensure that they are getting all of the required nutrients for healthy shell growth and to avoid serious health issues such as metabolic bone disease.
